Wellness Beyond the Spa

In a previous world, hotel guests would fill their wellness tank with a one hour massage or an afternoon lounging around the spa. Alternatively, those extra keen to shape their holidays around wellness altogether, would book into a specific spa package and dot around from treatment to treatment.

The world has moved on and the word “wellness” means something completely different today.

Whereas “wellness” used to equate relaxation, in today’s world, the word suggests “transformation”. Yesterday’s consumers would fit a spa day into their holiday to recharge. Today’s customers are seeking to leave their stay altogether in a new state of being.

This shift suggests a breaking down of the 4 walls of the spa as we know it and in consequence a spreading of wellness throughout the entire hotel and into every aspect of the customer experience.

Wellness must now be a key feature of the full hospitality experience; present in the activities available, the amenities in the rooms, the services offered and the guest journey.

Wellness must be involved to the F&B offering; providing nutrition-focused concepts and alternatives.

Wellness must present itself through innovative movement options, beyond the classic fitness and weekly yoga class. Guests today want something MORE than that.

Wellness must of course still exist through the channel of a Spa, but the classic copy-paste Spa offering is no longer enough. Guest are seeking unique treatments and experiences.

This brings with it a challenge for the traditional hotel model, shaped by a segregation of departments. Today’s hospitality establishments who wish to stay up to speed with an increasingly wellness-focused clientele will need to accept wellness beyond the spa and welcome this new wave with open arms. Just like the world of wellness itself, it will be revolutionary, a little bit scary but transformational beyond measure.
